akashi-kaikyo-bridge-view-from-bottom

We sit on the bench
Looking at the bridge
As it disappears into the mist

You with an engineer’s fascination
Marveling at the intricacies
Of weight
Of balance
Of strength

Intrigued by the cables that bind
And the struts that support
The longest bridge in the world

You have an engineer’s understanding
Of how it was built and what it is made of
And you are awed by the genius of it.

But Dad, there is a gulf between us
Wider and deeper than that bay

Your mathematics cannot span it
Your science cannot cross it
My words cannot speak it

And so we sit
Side by side
And stare into the fog
